Knee Injury and Knee Bracing Options at Mountain Sport Clinic

Knee Ligaments

Ligament Severity and Bracing Options

  • For smaller, lower grade ligament injuries, we often use taping or an off the shelf brace. These options provide the necessary support to help you move with more confidence and return to activity sooner.

  • For larger, more severe tears, however, we might recommend a dedicated custom ligament support brace to ensure maximum stability while awaiting surgery or during specific activities.

Knee injuries make it difficult to determine the best recovery plan. How much rest? Is it good to move it? Should I use ice? Should I wear a brace?

As a clinic in a Nelson, British Columbia, knee injuries are one of the most common issues we treat at Mountain Sport Clinic. Given the active, outdoor lifestyle here - with constant hills, staircases, and challenging terrain - it’s understandable that these key joints sometimes need attention.

The decision to use a knee brace depends on the type/severity of your injury and what you need to do next with your leg!

Ligaments in the knee are tough bands of fibrous tissue that function like straps or heavy-duty ropes to connect bone to bone across a joint.

In the knee we have four main ligaments:

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)

  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)

  • Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)

  • Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)

Ligaments can be injured when a sudden powerful force pushes the joint beyond its normal range of motion. Movements can include: slipping, tripping, changing direction, or landing awkwardly from a jump.

In certain high speed sports with heavy machines (like motocross), athletes may choose to wear a custom ligament support brace preventatively to help reduce their risk of injury.
